Will all those years of gaming have trained them to imagine the many different ways a crisis can evolve?

As he played it, he realized the game was good -- so good, in fact, that it forced him to rethink some of his long-cherished theories. For example, he'd often argued that World War II could have been prevented if Britain had confronted Germany over its invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1938. France would have joined with Britain, he figured, pinching Germany between their combined might and that of the Russian army. "Germany wasn't ready for war, and they would have been defeated," he figured. "War in 1938 would have been better than war in 1942."

But when he ran the simulation in Making History, everything fell to pieces. The French defected, leaving Britain's expeditionary force to fly solo -- and get crushed by Germany. His theory, as it turns out, didn't hold water. He hadn't realized that a 1938 attack would not leave Britain enough time to build the diplomatic case with France.
[...]
Ferguson discovered something that fans of war-strategy and civilization-building "god" games have realized for years: Games are a superb vehicle for thinking deeply about complex systems. After you've spent months pondering the intricacies of the weapons markets in Eve Online, or the mysteries of troop placement in Company of Heroes, you develop a Mandlebrotian appreciation of chaos dynamics -- how a single change can take a stable situation and sent it spiraling all to hell, or vice versa.

Though Ferguson couldn't figure out how to make his 1938 scenario work, there was a better expert who could: His 13-year-old son, who was a whiz at strategy games. Rather than rush out to attack Germany, his son carefully set up robust trade agreements with France first to make sure the country felt diplomatically obligated to go along with the fight. Presto: France fought, and Germany fell.

Tjohoo! Han menar att Storbritannien ska imitera USA:
"We should do the same, bringing out the freedom that lies at the heart of the story," Mr Straw writes in The World Today, journal of Chatham House, the foreign affairs think-tank.

"That means freedom through the narrative of the Magna Carta, the Civil War, the Bill of Rights, through Adam Smith and the Scottish enlightenment, the fight for votes, for the emancipation of Catholics and non-conformists, of women and of the black community, the Second World War, the fight after that for rights for minority groups, the fight now against unbridled terror."

Mr Straw says that growing integration increases the need for a national story of identity, one that should be expressed through the "core values of democracy: freedom, fairness, tolerance and plurality, for all to subscribe to".
Hur blir "the emancipation of Catholics" en central del av Den Brittiska Historien om "The Terrible Oppression of Catholics" aldrig varit det?

"[I]t does not require individuals to give up distinctive cultural attributes, such as their religion," förklarar Straw, men "To be a British citizen, fully playing your part in British society, you must subscribe to that." In short, the Six Nations have no legal rights to the lands in question, and have had none for over a century.
[...]
The first myth is that the Six Nations Indians have a valid aboriginal claim to the subject lands, and the second myth is that the Six Nations were the aboriginal occupants of these lands at the time of first contact with European explorers, traders and colonizers.
[...]
As for moral obligations, a review of the history of the Six Nations Indians indicates that they are not innocent victims of land robbery by European colonizers, but are instead themselves the culprits who terrorized, conquered, and displaced many other Indian tribes whose lands and resources they sought to control.
I dag samlas arbetarrörelsen i Sverige. Med all rätt.
Cho - clearly proficient with technology - did not use YouTube to make his statement; he sent his material to the news networks... the immediate impact Cho achieved by going to an old media outlet was clear.

"It could end up being a significant moment," says Jay Rosen, a journalism professor... "The simple fact of people getting pictures and videos and giving it news organisations to run - that has now been institutionalised."
NBC's exclusive was striking because, until Cho's footage came to light, much of the media response to the Blacksburg shootings had been to view it as a watershed for eyewitness reporting.

The shaky and brief images of police storming a university building, recorded by student Jamal Albarghouti on his mobile phone, had been a breakthrough. After filming the clip, Albarghouti sent it to CNN, which placed it online - where it was watched by millions - and quickly ran it on air. "We used to say that journalists write the first draft of history. Not so, not any longer," says Dan Gillmor, author of citizen journalism bible We The Media. "The people on the ground at these events write the first draft."
it was the mainstream outlets that flooded the campus in an attempt to tap the students: CNN, for example, sent 100 staffers to Blacksburg after the attacks occurred. Those who had written about events quickly became confused by the media storm that enveloped them. [...]

as the day wore on many journalists - including one from the Guardian - simply added comments saying "talk to me, please, here's my number". [...] Many students were evidently uncomfortable with the online attention. "You have reporters that will create a Facebook identity just to get students' contact information, or who will start an online memorial to get people posting for a story," complains Courtney Thomas, a campus journalist who is in her final year at the university. "It's just inappropriate."

The sheer volume of solicitations may have lifted the lid off one of the ugliest parts of journalism - and done so in public. But it also showed that, when the onus is on the eyewitness to contact the journalist, an inversion can occur. "I got the sense there was a role reversal," says student Kevin Tosh, whose inbox filled up with entreaties from journalists.
With a wealth of first-hand material available to the public, what extra value can the established media bring? Is culling information from sites enough - and what lengths do you go to in order to verify that the information is genuine?... [W]hile the first instinct of reporters is to look for scoops and exclusive interviews, things become more complex when witnesses have already made their statements - unmediated, to the world, and not for glory.

Founded by a former member of the neo-fascist National Front, the club flies the flag of apartheid South Africa at every meeting... Surrounded by nostalgists for this racist rule, Roberts, according to the club's website, "finished his speech by proposing a toast to the Springbok Club, which he said he considered the heir to previous imperial achievements."
For example, he has advised Bush to adopt "the whole idea of mass internment," saying: "I think it is the way the administration of Iraq should go." At his lunch with Bush, according to economist Irwin Stelzer, who was present, Roberts cited Ireland as a place where internment worked.

Every major historian of Ireland--across the political spectrum--says the opposite is the case. When internment was introduced in Northern Ireland in 1971, violence vastly increased--and it only fell when it was abolished. The decision by the British to grab Catholics on the flimsiest evidence and hold them without trial is universally regarded as the greatest recruiting gift the Irish Republican Army was ever handed. "Roberts has no track record as a historian of Ireland," says Brendan O'Leary of the University of Pennsylvania, an expert on both Ireland and counterinsurgency techniques. "If he did, he would know that there is a total historical consensus that internment was a catastrophe."

Roberts senaste bok heter A History of the English Speaking Peoples.

The Guardian gör hursomhelst en intressant iakttagelse i sammanhanget.
It's important to understand the changed culture in which the modern military now operates. Many traditional military assumptions are unsustainable in a world in which service personnel are volunteers with human rights and mobile telephones. In many ways, this is a change to be welcomed: there is no way that first world war commanders could have sent a generation to be slaughtered on the Western Front if our great-grandfathers had been blogging each night from Picardy.
I värvningskontraktet skriver man helt enkelt in en provisionsklausul. "Du krigar åt oss. [...]

I say this because the latest hot news from the States, as reported in last week’s Times, suggests that the Americans are now actually looking to us for pointers to their future. Britain! Bad Teeth And Lard Land! Apparently, this season of American Idol... has taken on a distinctly British tinge.
So, to recap: in the States there is now a national campaign to vote for a loser, as a joke. This is, surely, the biggest outbreak of un-American behaviour since the McCarthy era. It’s positively British. This is the kind of thing we do. We, after all, pioneered the wry celebration of lacklustre or downright awful things...
Consider: in the 21st century, we can now, at any point, access any moment of artistic brilliance. Elvis’s Sun recordings. The Beatles working through early versions of Strawberry Fields Forever. The Muppets doing Ma Na Ma Na. Given this, then, it is, perhaps, understandable why we might, eventually, tire of things that are good. There are too many of them! You can get them as a polyphonic ringtone for £1! Good things are everywhere!

Things that are bad, on the other hand – genuinely awful, as upsetting as watching an orphanage burn to the ground on Christmas Eve while Santa struggles on the roof with a broken leg – are rare. [...]

Because while iTunes, YouTube and a thousand illegal download sites make acquiring a 1,000-strong playlist of undisputed genius an afternoon’s work, finding awful stuff is a great deal harder. Really awful records still have to be tracked down in dusty record shops. They never make the Top 75. They need, to be frank, the eye of a connoisseur.

Given this, it’s fair to say that, these days, it’s the bad stuff you’re into that defines you – and far more eloquently than the good stuff. It requires effort. It requires discipline. It requires, oddly, taste. Therefore, any American voting for the ridiculous, cheerful, doomed galoot Sanjaya Malakar to be the winner of 2007’s American Idol is, paradoxically, making the US a more culturally refined place. I think you know what I’m going to say: yes, I’ll vote for that.

He became the first member of Congress to say publicly that he doesn’t believe in “a supreme being.” The next most powerful politician to identify himself as a “non-theist” in response to a question by the Secular Coalition for America was a school board president in Berkeley.

Some described Stark’s admission as “coming out of the closet.” Others rued the fact that God was not on his side. A spokesman for the Concerned Women for America unabashedly bashed him, saying that “a Christian worldview is proper for a politician to have.”

Not surprisingly, Stark has no ambitions for the presidency. In one of those endless polls surveying whether we are “ready for” a black, a woman, a Jew or others to be president, only 14 percent of Americans believe we’re ready for an atheist. What Stark has done, however, is open a fresh chapter in this year’s hefty book on presidential politics and religion.

Knappast, tycker Asia Times
Portraying the past world in a contemporary language with the help of voiceovers in case we missed the message, the dramatic feature plunges into the midst of a violent battle that fully resonates with the contemporary discourses on "clashing civilizations".

More than pure entertainment, it is a movie that wants people to reflect on what they are seeing, by teaching a lesson or two about history, by eliciting sympathy for its exalted Spartan heroes and heroines standing up to the world's first superpower, the Achaemenid Persians.

Saturated with not-so-subtle Persianphobia, the movie calls for the interrogation of the political agenda behind it, at a time when Iran is constantly threatened with military invasion and "all options are on the table" in Washington. In Los Angeles, the cognitive assault has been raging for some time.
Bla bla bla...
It's about these 300 Greek dudes who stomp the sugar-coated shit out of like a million other dudes. I have a feeling that a lot of high school sports coaches are going to show this film to their teams before they play. Also, gay dudes and divorced women are going to use screen captures for computer wallpaper.
[...]
I can't spoil the plot because THANK GOD THERE ISN'T ONE. Just ass kicking that kicks ass that, while said ass is getting kicked, is kicking yet more ass that's hitting someone's balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.
[...]
Basically, the Greek dudes are fighting these Persian dudes, but the director, who must have a dick made of three machine guns, does it all like a video game. The Greeks fight every death metal video from the last ten years. There's wave after wave of giants, freaks, ninjas, mutants, wizards, and a hunchback who looks like he's got Rosie O'Donnell on his back.
NOT SO GOOD THING:
DUDE NUDITY ("DUDE-ITY")

These are Greek times, when there were a lot of naked women around. And there are some naked women in this film, but almost every naked woman scene has a muscular dude giving the screen an ass picnic. Dude-ity is something directors put in their movies so people will think they're serious, I guess, and not just throwing in naked hotties.

Any directors reading this – IT'S OKAY TO JUST THROW IN NAKED HOTTIES.

Can't someone make a movie about naked Amazons and call it PAUSE BUTTON?
My final analysis is 300 the most ass-ruling movie I've seen this year, and will probably be the King of 2007 unless someone makes a movie where a pair of sentient boobs fights a werewolf.

What's at stake here isn't error. It's how we in the professional knowledge business greet our new overlords--the plain people of the Internet. Right now, we're lobbing fibs at them of just the kind the Internet is good at puncturing--and, indeed, of just the kind the losing side used the last time our civilization endured a revolution in the ownership of knowledge."

Men ändå. Ministers and other public figures, along with newspapers (including the Guardian, sadly), have referred to 2007 as the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery. That is not so. Even to say that the slave trade (that is the trafficking in human beings as distinct from "slavery", which is the condition of being enslaved) was ended in 1807 is not strictly true: the act did not come into effect until 1808 and "the abominable traffick" was continued by Europeans and North Americans for decades afterwards. So, to be precise: 200 years ago the British parliament passed a bill to end trading in enslaved Africans using British ships. Before slavery was finally stamped out, somewhere between 10 million and 30 million Africans had been traded, transported or killed by Europeans in the Caribbean and the Americas.
Some white people are hooked on guilt, and others are seeking to appropriate the bicentenary to promote the image of a benevolent Britain ridding the world of slavery. Some black people, meanwhile, are locked into seeing themselves in a state of victimhood. I am sure few people really enjoy these feelings, although they can masquerade as a source of comfort...
In our post-9/11 era, there's suspicion and antagonism toward religious belief, especially when it mixes with politics. Secularists such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris describe the beliefs of the faithful as a "delusion" and akin to "insanity." Wilberforce endured similar scorn. He was lampooned for his "damnable doctrine" and dismissed as a "treacherous fanatic."

Modern skeptics should remember that the great campaign against the international slave trade was not led by atheists. It was fought by people with deep Christian convictions about the dignity and freedom of every person made in the image of God.

This year, Britain is honoring Wilberforce's legacy with lectures and conferences. In the United States, the biographical film "Amazing Grace" opens in theaters Friday. Some will chafe at all the attention. Yet we face our own assaults on human rights — including the sexual trafficking of women and girls, genocidal violence in Sudan and the prison camps of North Korea.

Surely we need more of Wilberforce's brand of faith today, not less.
Om just svensk kultur
